This is a story about dis­cov­ery.  How do people find you and learn about what you do?

Yes you do.

I'm sure every one of them knows all about you.  But no matter how popular you are, there are people who haven't heard of you.

Un­fortun­ately, there isn't a busi­ness in the world that earns it's living off friends alone.

So, you need customers.  New customers.  All the time.  Because the old ones fade away for all kinds of reasons, even if you treat them well.

#I Don't Know You

If I don't know anyth­ing about you, I can't look you up on Facebook.  I can't find your web­­site.  I might Google some­­thing I want, but there's a lot of com­pet­ition.  It's hard to find some­­thing specific.

So, how you do tell people who you are and what you do, if they're not even look­ing for you?

#What's a Display Ad?

Dis­play advert­ising helps people dis­cover who you are and what you can do for them.

You show some­­thing attract­ive to build inter­est, and if some­one likes it, they click and get sent to your web page.  There they can learn all about you and what you offer.

Even if they don't click, they've learnt a little about you.  This helps later.

Advert­ising is a little risky.

The people you're trying to attract don't know you yet.  They have no idea what you can do for them.  They may in no mood to buy anyth­ing at all right now, or just be too far away to care.

Isn't that kinda waste­ful?

Yes and no.

Ads thrown to the wind are just a waste.  You want to be a little smart about it.

Maybe focus on the right kinds of people, people close by, some­where lots of people are already look­ing for things.  Things like yours.

Some­where you can be seen, be relev­ant, be mem­or­able.

These are your customers.

We get lots of inter­­est­ed eyeballs.  Hundreds per hour, thousands per day.  Every day.  They want to know what's here.  They want to know about you.

We have adverts.  Only local adverts.  Just one per page.  Your ad, if you'd like it to be.

The ads are cheap, cheaper than Facebook.  Cheaper than flyers.

1,000 eyeballs will cost you just $10.

You can advert­ise wher­ever you like.  Sit on the front page, toot in the trad­ies sect­ion or sponsor your favourite club.

What­ever works best.

You decide where your ad goes, when it's shown and how often.

When some­one clicks, it goes to your web page.  Clicks cost noth­ing.

#The Truth

Advert­ising is funny.  People pro­m­ise all kinds of stuff, like which advert­ising 'work best'.

The truth is: all advert­ising works.

Differ­ent ads in differ­ent places reach differ­ent people.  A single ad will only change a per­son's behavi­our a tiny bit.  Even with repit­ition, opportun­ity and timing still matter.

The ad I saw last week might remind me of some­­thing I need this week.  Because I saw your ads, when I'm ready to buy, I'm more likely to think about you.

Advert­ising put you in people's minds.  Before they need what you sell.  Before they start Googl­ing.

  • Sign in to our site. Go to My Adverts and click Add.
  • Decide how you want your ad to work. Where, when, how often.
  • Upload your own artwork, or ask us to make some for you.
  • Buy some credits to get started. Top them up as needed.
